Under the SADC-RTSM, South African road signs are grouped into three primary categories: Regulatory Signs (Control, Command, and Prohibition signs that are legally enforceable), Warning Signs (red triangle hazard and advance warning signs), and Guidance/Information Signs (direction, tourism, route markers, and local information).

A circular sign with a blue background and white symbol is a Regulatory Command Sign. It indicates a mandatory action that you MUST obey, such as a minimum speed limit or compulsory direction (e.g. Turn Left Ahead or Keep Left).

A double solid white dividing line (RM3) means you may NOT cross or straddle the line with any part of your vehicle under any circumstances, whether to overtake, turn into a driveway across oncoming traffic, or perform a U-turn.

The computerized DLTC learner's licence exam contains 28 questions on Road Signs and Markings. You must score at least 23 out of 28 (82.1%) to pass this section.

At an octagonal Stop sign (R1), your vehicle must come to a complete, standstill stop behind the solid stop line even if the road is completely empty. At an inverted triangular Yield sign (R2), you only need to stop if oncoming or intersecting traffic has priority; if the junction is clear, you can roll through safely without coming to a dead stop.
