Statutory Towing Rules in South Africa (Regulation 330)
Every version of the computerized DLTC learner's licence test includes at least 2 to 3 questions on Towing Breakdown Vehicles (Regulation 330) and Projecting Loads (Regulations 221–229). Because these questions test exact distances, speeds, and exceptions, memorizing the statutory numbers below guarantees easy marks on test day.

The 5 Golden K53 Towing Rules (Reg 330)
| Towing Parameter | Statutory Limit | Legal Exception / Examiner Trap |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Distance Between Vehicles | 3.5 Metres | The gap between the rear of the towing vehicle and the front of the towed vehicle may never exceed 3.5 metres. |
| Mandatory Red Flag Threshold | Over 1.8 Metres | If the tow rope, chain, or drawbar distance exceeds 1.8 metres (up to 3.5m), the connection must be made clearly visible with a 300mm × 300mm red flag. |
| Maximum Towing Speed Limit | 30 km/h | Applies whenever towing with a rope, chain, or wire cable. Exception: If the vehicles are connected by a solid rigid drawbar or tow-bar, the 30 km/h restriction does NOT apply! |
| Steering & Brakes of Towed Vehicle | Licensed Person in Control | A licensed driver for that class of vehicle must steer and operate the brakes of the towed vehicle, unless the front steerable wheels are lifted off the ground (e.g. tow-truck dolly) or controlled by a rigid steerable drawbar. |
| Carrying Passengers in Towed Vehicle | Strictly Prohibited | No passengers may be carried inside a towed vehicle (except the licensed person steering it), unless the towed vehicle is a semi-trailer OR is being towed at not more than 30 km/h by a tractor/towing vehicle. |
DLTC Examiner Trap Warning: Read the question carefully to see whether the vehicle is being towed with a rope/chain (max 30 km/h) or a solid drawbar / tow-bar (normal road speed limit applies, provided brakes work).
Projecting Loads & Maximum Vehicle Dimensions (Regs 221–229)
| Direction / Dimension | Maximum Statutory Limit | Flag & Lighting Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Front Load Projection | 300 mm (30 cm) | No load may project more than 300 mm beyond the front bumper of any vehicle. |
| Rear Load Projection | 1.8 Metres | Any load projecting more than 300 mm to the rear requires a 300mm × 300mm red flag by day, and a red light/red retro-reflector at night. |
| Side Width Projection (Cars & Trucks) | 1.25m from centre (2.5m total width) | Heavy goods vehicles (>12,000 kg GVM) may measure up to 2.6m wide (1.3m from centreline). Projections >150mm beyond the side require white front and red rear markers at night. |
| Motorcycle (Code 1) Load Projections | 600mm Front / 900mm Rear / 450mm Side | For motorcycles: max 600mm ahead of front axle, 900mm behind rear axle, and 450mm on either side of the wheel centreline. |
| Maximum Vehicle Height (with Load) | 4.3 Metres | Maximum overall height from the road surface (4.65m for double-deck buses). |
