Why 48% of South African Learners Fail on Their First Attempt (And How You Will Pass)
Passing your K53 Learner's Licence test at a South African Driver's Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) on your first attempt comes down to understanding two things: the Triple-Hurdle Pass Mark and the 18 statutory numbers tested in almost every 64-question draw.
1. The Official K53 Pass Mark (Triple-Hurdle Scoring)
Whether you write on the touchscreen Computerized Learner's Licence Test (CLLT) or the legacy paper booklet, your exam has 64 multiple-choice questions split into three sections. You must pass every single section independently in the same 45-minute sitting:
- Section 1: Rules of the Road — 28 Questions • Minimum Pass Mark: 22 / 28 (78.6%) (Maximum 6 mistakes allowed)
- Section 2: Road Traffic Signs, Signals & Markings — 28 Questions • Minimum Pass Mark: 23 / 28 (82.1%) (Maximum 5 mistakes allowed)
- Section 3: Vehicle Controls — 8 Questions • Minimum Pass Mark: 6 / 8 (75.0%) (Maximum 2 mistakes allowed)
If you score 28/28 on Rules and 28/28 on Road Signs, but score 5/8 on Vehicle Controls, the eNaTIS computer marks your entire test as FAILED. That is why your first 30 minutes of study should always be our Interactive Vehicle Controls Diagram.
2. The 2026 K53 Statutory Numbers Cheat Sheet
Memorise these exact figures from the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 before walking into the testing room:
- 1.5 metres: Minimum parking distance from either side of a fire hydrant.
- 5 metres: Minimum parking distance from an urban intersection corner.
- 9 metres: Minimum stopping/parking distance from a pedestrian crossing, bridge, tunnel, or road constriction.
- 12 metres: Minimum parking distance from either side of a bus stop sign.
- 30 km/h & 3.5 metres: Maximum speed (30 km/h) and maximum tow-rope distance (3.5m) when towing a breakdown vehicle with a rope or chain (no passengers allowed in the towed vehicle unless using a solid tow-bar).
- 60 km/h, 100 km/h & 120 km/h: Default general speed limits (Urban = 60 km/h, Outside Urban Area / Rural = 100 km/h, Freeways = 120 km/h; Heavy goods vehicles > 9,000 kg GVM = 80 km/h).
- 0 km/h over the limit when overtaking: You are NEVER allowed to exceed the speed limit when passing another vehicle.
- 2-Second vs 3-Second Rule: Minimum dry-weather safe following distance is 2 seconds for Code 2 light motor vehicles, and 3 seconds for Code 3 heavy vehicles (Code 10/14), motorcycles, or wet/night conditions.
- 150 metres (Regulation 298A): You may only pull into the yellow left shoulder to let faster traffic pass on a single-lane road between sunrise and sunset when visibility ahead is at least 150m.
- 45 metres & 90 metres: Emergency warning triangle must be placed at least 45m behind a broken-down vehicle; your hooter must be audible from 90m.
